Sacred Music

Music, that is the science or the sense of proper modulation, is likewise given by God’s generosity to mortals having rational souls in order to lead them to higher things.

Saint Augustine, Epis. 161.
De origine animae hominis, 1, 2; PL XXXIII, 725

Music at Saint Rose exists to enhance the liturgy, keeping with both the rich tradition of the Catholic Church and the Second Vatican Council.  There is a place for everyone to actively participate.  For more information, contact Director of Music Brian Russell at brussell@saintrose.org.

Ensembles & Opportunities

Choral Music returns to Saint Rose and you are invited!

We will field a combined Adult/Youth Choir and a Children’s Choir for the Feasts of Pentecost and Holy Trinity.  And with only three rehearsals and two Masses, this is a perfect time for you to try it out before we start in earnest after Summer.

Children’s Choir – Grades 2-5

Rehearsals:  Wednesdays from 6:30-7:10pm.  May 18, 25, & June 1.

Masses:  Sunday, June 5 at 11:00am and Sunday, June 12 at 8:30am

Adult Choir – Grades 13-99

Rehearsals:  Wednesdays from 7:15-8:15pm.  May 18, 25, & June 1.

Masses:  Sunday, June 5 at 8:30am and Sunday, June 12 at 11:00am.

You don’t need previous experience.  You don’t need to know how to read music (but it helps).  You just need the desire to reestablish choral music in this place of worship! The Adult/Youth Choir will be joined by the St. Rose Choral Scholars (the small ensemble that has been singing at the 8:30am and 11:00am Masses for the last couple of months).  The Children’s Choir will not just be window dressing in Mass – they will lead all liturgical elements of the service, from the opening Introit to the Communion Chant, including a choral anthem all their own!

Cantors

Cantors serve to lead the responsorial singing with the congregation at every Mass. A strong voice and the ability to read music well are required. The Cantor Corps is currently looking for new members – please email Dr. Russell at brussell@saintrose.org for more information.

Instrumentalists

If you play an instrument, please contact the Director of Music about occasional opportunities to play during Mass.

Choral Scholars

The St. Rose Choral Scholars are student interns learning more about sacred music.  They serve as section leaders for the Adult Choir and form a small ensemble called the Collegium Vocale.
