Dear Parents, We wanted to give you a little information about our discipline system in Kindergarten. There are several aspects of this system. First, we will be trying the 1-2-3 Magic system. We will discuss the system itself as well as how it is working in the classroom during Expectation Night. Basically, we will “count” the children if they make an inappropriate choice. When they have been “counted” to 3 then they will receive a timeout, also called a correction. There are certain behaviors that will result in an automatic timeout. Whenever a child receives a timeout, the teacher will record it on her clipboard and in the child’s daily folder along with the corresponding code (see next page). If a child receives no timeouts in a day, then he/she will receive a stamp in the daily folder as well as a thumb stamp. We are asking that you check this folder each evening, sign it, discuss it with your child, and return it the following day. This will also be where the students keep any homework they may have. This will be our daily communication tool. The third aspect of the discipline system is the Wednesday folder. Here, you will see the same information that you are getting daily but for the entire previous week. This may sound redundant however, this is the same format 1st Grade uses and this should be a smooth transition for you. The Wednesday folder will have all communication from the office for the week as well as a letter from the teacher detailing the happenings of the week. Finally, though we hate to mention it, the topic of demerits. If a child receives 4 or more corrections (timeouts) in a day, then he/she will also receive a demerit (Kindergarten only—1st Grade and up receive a demerit after 3). An automatic demerit can be issued if the action is severe enough. If a child receives 4 demerits in a quarter, then he/she will be required to attend a Saturday detention (Kindergarten only—1st Grade and up receive detention after 3). We hope this explains, clearly, the measures we will take in the event a student makes a poor choice. Please keep the following page in a visible location in your home so you may refer to them if your child receives a correction this year. We also ask you to please sign the bottom of the following page and return it to school for our records. Thank you and May God bless you and your family this school year!
