A New Beginning

06-06-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

I want to thank everyone who took the survey for our new schedule and protocols. I am very happy that we had almost 500 responses and that we have time to formulate our plans for a smooth implementation – I hope! I am not surprised that the responses to the survey express a very wide range of opinions and concerns. Of course, it is impossible to fulfill everyone’s expectations, and yet I think that we are making broad and generous provisions for many points of view. I am trying to be sensitive to the concerns that many of you still have while also reducing unnecessary burdens on everyone.  I am trying to be deliberate about making changes for the good of the whole parish and this restraint requires patience on the part of all of us. It takes a longer time to turn a bigger ship, and we are about the biggest one in the diocese. Many of the changes we made during the pandemic were out of necessity and for the moment. I want these new changes to be guiding us toward permanent practices for the parish. I am frankly grateful for the opportunity to reflect on our liturgical/devotional life. In hindsight, we can see many things more clearly than we did during the darker days of the pandemic, but we have no time to waste rehashing what has already happened. It is time to move forward!

NEW MASS SCHEDULE / NUEVA HORARIO DE MISA

New Schedule Narrative

On Sundays, the following schedule changes will begin as of Sunday, June 13. The 9:45 a.m. Mass will be discontinued. It was the last Mass added when we had strict limits on our capacity, and it crowds the morning with about a 15 minute "turn-around time" between it and the Masses before and after. On special days like Palm Sunday, it is even tighter. This will also allow time for confessions without Mass going on simultaneously. The Sunday Mass schedule will be: 7:00am, 8:30am, and 11:00am in English: 3:00pm in Spanish; and 5 p.m. in English. The Saturday evening Mass schedule will remain the same: 4:30 p.m. in English and 6:30pm in Spanish. This schedule will provide us with seven Masses for the Sunday Obligation, stretching from 4:30pm on Saturday to 5:00pm on Sunday. This is a net gain of two Masses from before the pandemic.

Before the pandemic, the weekend Masses generally were the same in regards to music and liturgy. Over the course of the pandemic, we have gradually distinguished the Masses musically and liturgically. In English, the Masses become "higher" liturgically as the weekend progresses -- progressive solemnity, indeed! I am happy that we are able to offer this range of Masses. Here is the plan for music/liturgy.

For the English Masses:

  • 4:30pm Praise and Worship music, ceremonies without incense
  • 7:00am No instrumental music, simple ceremonies
  • 8:30am Hymns with organ, ceremonies without incense
  • 11:00am Chanted Propers (scriptural texts proper for each Mass), organ, full ceremonies
  • 5:00pm Chanted Propers, Latin Mass parts, organ, full ceremonies

Spanish Masses:

  • alternating guitar choirs/organ, full ceremonies at both

Daily Mass will continue at 7:00am on Monday through Friday and at 8:00am on Saturday. We will have a second Mass each weekday but at different times on different days. On Monday and Friday, Mass will be offered at 2:10pm. During the school year, this Mass on Monday will be the all-school Mass. It will come at the end of the school day. I hope that it will be a convenient time for both those picking up children after school as well for those who prefer a Mass later than early morning but also well before dark. On Tuesday, the Spanish Mass will continue at 7:00pm, as will the Mass in English at 6:00pm on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will offer a midday Mass at the hospital chapel. At present, it is only for those working or visiting the hospital. The hope is that it will soon be open to the public.

Confessions

Confessions will be heard on Sundays at 9:45am and at 1:45pm (Rather than a set ending time, the priest will hear confessions of those waiting and will end confessions when all have been heard. This will be the practice as well on Saturday evening.) During the week, confessions will be heard from 6:00-6:45am on Monday and Friday. Confessions will begin at 5:00pm on Tuesday and Thursday (until 6:45pm) and on Wednesday (until 5:45pm). On Saturday confessions will be from 8:45-9:45am and at 5:30pm.

Eucharistic Adoration

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will continue from the end of the 7:00am Mass on Thursday until before the 7:00am Mass on Friday. Adoration will also accompany Confessions on Monday and Friday at 6:00am and Tuesday and Wednesday at 5:00pm.

Mass by media

We will discontinue live stream Masses and overflow into the gym. These were provisions made during the pandemic. Mass on media, however, is not a substitute for the obligation of in-person attendance at Mass. For those excused from the obligation to attend Mass because of illness or other legitimate reasons, there are many resources for watching Mass, if desired. The overflow in the gym is falling into disuse, and adequate room remains in the church. We will also no longer have sign-ups for Masses. We will offer live-stream and overflow Masses from time to time for special circumstances.

Liturgical/devotional practices

Holy Water will return to the font and stoops. We will add kneelers at the stations for Holy Communion for those who wish to use them. Holy Communion on the tongue remains appropriate as the universal norm for reception of the Blessed Sacrament. We will not resume the ordinary distribution of the Precious Blood from the chalice nor the physical exchange of the sign of peace. On the human level, both are matters of concern for many not only in a pandemic but even in ordinary flu season, and both are optional according to the liturgical norms of the Church. We will offer the Precious Blood from the chalice on appropriate occasions, such as Holy Thursday, First Holy Communion, and Corpus Christi. Although reception of Holy Communion in both kinds is a fuller sign, we need to remember the Doctrine of Concomitance (CCC 1390) which teaches us that the whole Christ is fully present in every particle of the Eucharist: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. The sign of peace will continue to be exchanged verbally as throughout the pandemic. Permanent printed liturgy guides will be available again in the pews, in both English and Spanish. These are annual resources in both languages: in English The Ignatius Pew Missal and in Spanish Canta la Misa. These resources contain the readings and proper antiphons for Sunday Masses, as well as a selection of hymns and Mass settings and other liturgical/devotional materials. The Liturgy of the Hours will continue to be celebrated Monday-Friday after the 7:00amMass.

Pandemic precautions

Since virus transmission remains relatively high in Rutherford County and the vaccination rate relatively low, we will continue to require masks at the 4:30pm Saturday Mass as well as the 7:00am and 3:00pm Sunday Masses. Otherwise, masks will be optional at the remaining weekend Masses as well as at daily Masses. All pews will be available for seating. Social distancing should, however, still be observed. I think that this provides options for those with varying concerns. The priests, deacons, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion will continue to wear masks for the distribution of Holy Communion. Unless there is a resurgence of the pandemic, meetings and events in parish facilities for parish groups will return to pre-pandemic procedures and regulations.

Liturgical Ministries/Volunteers

I am grateful for the generous response of volunteers to resume regular service at our Masses. The plan is to provide retreat/training sessions for all ministries/volunteers as a renewal. These sessions will not all be in place by June 13 but will be planned and implemented in the weeks to come.

Conclusion

This is not the final word! As a matter of fact, as God continues to bless us and as we all become more comfortable in a receding-pandemic world, we will be eliminating even more precautions. I am happy with the new plans, even though they are not final. I believe that our schedule of worship indicates a generous and regular community of witnesses to Jesus Christ as Savior! We need Him, and we want Him among us. He delights to be with us. You will be keeping your priests busy as priests, but we love it! We all love Saint Rose as the place of encounter with the fullness of Jesus Christ in this community!
