The Best Time is Now

10-17-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

The recently-filed lawsuit is a matter of concern and prayer within the parish. Indeed, I hope that we are all turning to prayer. Since it is a legal matter, we need to let the legal process run its course. The following comments, I hope, are offered to propose Saint Rose of Lima Parish as a place of encounter with the fullness of Jesus Christ in our community.

I recently attended my 40th high school reunion. Over dinner with two friends one night, we were discussing what has been the best time of our lives. I guess that is what us old people do! After a moment to consider the question, I said that I thought that now is the best time of my life. It is certainly not the easiest or most fun time, but I deeply believe that it is the best. I am more aware of the presence and action of God in my life now and therefore have more peace. It is indeed strange to have interior peace when there is so much confusion in the world. I am deeply grateful.

I believe that now is also the best time for Saint Rose of Lima Parish. As in my own life, these are not the easiest or most fun times in the parish; but I deeply believe that they are the best times. During the more limiting moments of the pandemic when many things were paused, I had an intuition that Saint Rose would emerge from those times with renewed life. I think that my intuition has been proven correct. So many of our ministries are growing and active: the school, the food pantry, the Haiti committee, PSR, University Catholic at MTSU, etc. I visited a ministry for the first time last week: the group that prepares and serves meals at Journey Home. There is also a retreat this weekend for married couples in our Spanish language community. It is hard to keep up with Saint Rose Parish! There are many weddings, funerals, confessions, and other sacramental celebrations. There are people praying at just about any time in the church. God is present and at work here.

As in my own life, we have concerns and responsibilities as a parish that we need to surrender to God. These can be serious and heavy, and yet God is with us. We encounter God here. Let us trust and cherish this presence in the only time that we can: now.

Faithfully,

Fr. Baker

Aquí encontramos a Dios.

Fielmente,

El p. Baker
