Stay on the Way!

10-10-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

The direction of Christian discipleship is one way: the way of the Lord Jesus Christ. Once we have set out on the religious, spiritual, and moral journey of following Jesus, there is no off-ramp, turning around, or even stopping. How could there be? Jesus is on the move! He is always leading us closer and closer to God. If other things get in the way, we have to let them go. We have to keep going with Jesus.

Our readings this Sunday show us the radical nature of the call to discipleship. In the first reading, we hear about prudence, which is to have the mind of Christ: to see and value things as He does. In the second reading, the word of God is described as "sharper than any two-edged sword" in penetrating our hearts. In the Gospel, the young man who comes to Jesus wants to follow him -- but only up to a point. He does not see the obstacle that his possessions are for him as a disciple of Jesus, and he refuses to let them go when challenged to do so by the Lord. He goes away sad.

The lesson is never to say "no" to Jesus, whatever He asks of you. Rather, follow the advice -- and the example -- of the Blessed Virgin Mary: "Do whatever He tells you."

Faithfully,
Fr. Baker

Fielmente,
El p. Baker
