Priesthood and the Poor Widow

There isn't an official day in the Church's calendar about the priesthood. In our diocese, this weekend is identified as Priesthood Sunday, and we are asked to support the seminarian education fund. I and the other priests in the parish are grateful for the remembrances we have received in thanksgiving for the priesthood by the faithful. It is good for us to support one another in our vocations, and I thank you for your prayerful support.

It happens that we have been reading about the priesthood from the Letter to the Hebrews as the second reading at Mass for several weeks. These readings continue through November to the end of the Church's year. The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that there is only one priest and one priesthood: Jesus Christ. Priests may have human talents, but what the faithful can and should expect from their priests is their identification with Jesus Christ especially in the sacraments and in prayer. I am humbled by the good example of my brother priests in this parish in their willingness to provide the sacraments so generously and to spend hours in counseling and formation with the faithful.

In the Gospel today, Jesus provides a beautiful model of Christian stewardship, that is, of how we are to spend ourselves in the service of the Gospel. In contrast to the prideful scribes, Jesus offers the example of the poor widow who gives everything to God. If we are faithful to our vocations in Christ, then we will imitate the poor widow. In the case of the priesthood, my humanity is like the two small coins of the widow. It is all that I have, but if I give it to the Lord, He will bless it.

El Sacerdocio y La Vuida Pobre

No hay un día oficial en el calendario de la Iglesia sobre el sacerdocio. En nuestra diócesis, este fin de semana se identifica como el Domingo del Sacerdocio, y se nos pide que apoyemos el fondo de educación para seminaristas. Los demás sacerdotes de la parroquia y yo estamos agradecidos por los regalos que hemos recibido en acción de gracias por el sacerdocio por parte de los fieles. Es bueno para nosotros que nos ayuden y ayudarnos unos a otros en nuestras vocaciones, y les agradezco su apoyo devoto.

Sucede que llevamos varias semanas leyendo sobre el sacerdocio de la Carta a los Hebreos como segunda lectura en la Misa. Estas lecturas continúan hasta noviembre hasta el final del año de la Iglesia. La Carta a los Hebreos nos recuerda que hay un solo sacerdote y un solo sacerdocio: Jesucristo. Los sacerdotes pueden tener talentos humanos, pero lo que los fieles pueden y deben esperar de sus sacerdotes es su identificación con Jesucristo, especialmente en los sacramentos y en la oración. Me siento honrado por el buen ejemplo de mis hermanos sacerdotes en esta parroquia, en su disposición a proporcionar los sacramentos con tanta generosidad, y a pasar horas en el asesoramiento y la formación con los fieles.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús ofrece un hermoso modelo de corresponsabilidad Cristiana, es decir, de cómo debemos dedicarnos al servicio del Evangelio. A diferencia de los escribas orgullosos, Jesús ofrece el ejemplo de la viuda pobre que lo da todo a Dios. Si somos fieles a nuestra vocación en Cristo, imitaremos a la viuda pobre. En el caso del sacerdocio, mi humanidad es como las dos pequeñas monedas de la viuda. Es todo lo que tengo, pero si se lo doy al Señor, Él lo bendecirá.
