Year of St. Joseph

On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Wednesday, December 8, the Year of St. Joseph will come to a close. This has been a special year for the Church, for our parish, and for me. There are many reasons to be devoted to St. Joseph. He is the patron of the Church, the protector of the Holy Family, and the model of a holy death. During the pandemic, which included this year in his honor, I have gone to St. Joseph especially for the "temporal and spiritual welfare of Saint Rose of Lima Parish and families." I don't know how many times I have prayed this petition to St. Joseph since March of 2020.

And he has heard my prayer! Our prayers! Early in the "shut-down" time of the pandemic, the parish was in a very difficult financial situation. That was completely understandable at the time. I think that we responded, as we always should, to a situation like that with a combination of prayerful trust and prudent action. I can assure you that St. Joseph got lots of prayers asking for his prayers during that time. I recommended that we as a parish pray for St. Joseph's intercession for our difficult situation, even before his year was declared.

Silently -- silence is always a characteristic of St. Joseph -- you, the people of the parish, in the midst of your own uncertain situations, lifted the parish by your generosity. You gave when giving was risky. We continued to have ups and downs, but we did not have to make any serious changes in our ministry. Thank you. And thank St. Joseph. Again and again, as needs would arise within the parish and beyond, we were able to respond generously as we always have.

Now that we are returning to a "new normal," our giving is strong, except in one area: regular offertory collections. Almost all of our special funds, for example those for Haiti, the food pantry, etc., are ahead of budget. But the offerings that keep the parish operations going, the ones that pay for the salaries, the program materials, the utilities, the insurance, etc., these offerings are behind for the year. And yet without these basic functions, we are not able to provide for special needs.

As we come to the end of the year of grace 2021, I am confident in St. Joseph to provide for the needs of the parish through you. I am praying in particular that more members of our parish will become regular donors to the regular offertory collection. That is best spiritually as well as for the budget. Funny how that works! Will you join me in this prayer to St. Joseph?

Finally, we will honor St. Joseph on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, following the 6 p.m. Holy Day Mass, praying together his litany and others devotions to this great saint! Please join me, if you can.

En la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, miércoles 8 de diciembre, concluirá el Año de San José. Este ha sido un año especial para la Iglesia, para nuestra parroquia y para mí. Hay muchas razones para dedicarse a San José. Es el patrón de la Iglesia, el protector de la Sagrada Familia y el modelo de una santa muerte. Y, sin embargo, sin estas funciones básicas, no podemos satisfacer necesidades especiales.

Rezo en particular para que más miembros de nuestra parroquia se conviertan en donantes regulares de la colecta del ofertorio regular.
