Don't worry, Lent is more than a month away. Nevertheless, I want to share with you a practice from the Church's treasury about getting ready for Lent. The disciplines of Lent are about conversion, that is, turning away from sin and following Jesus more closely.

I am writing this message on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. St. Paul had a very dramatic conversion experience on the road to Damascus, but it did not end there but rather only began. St. Josemaria says: "Conversion is the matter of a moment. Sanctification is the work of a lifetime.”

In the old calendar, there was a "mini-season" called Pre-Lent made up of the three Sundays before Ash Wednesday. Purple vestments were worn, etc. Pre-Lent gave us a chance to get ready for keeping a good Lent. I think that this takes into account human psychology better than starting "cold turkey" on Ash Wednesday.

Even though we do not observe Pre-Lent liturgically, I recommend taking the pre-lenten time to prepare for a good Lent this year. The best thing to do is to go to Confession in order to start Lent with a clean soul. Pray and ask the Lord what He wants from you. Ask how you can grow closer to him particularly in almsgiving, fasting, and prayer.

Here is one visible thing that we can do. Find the dried up palms that you were given on Palm Sunday last year and bring them to Church in the next couple of weeks. We will have a box in the narthex to collect the palms in order to burn them to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday. We will burn up the dried up practices of the past in order to mark a new beginning that will lead to fresh new life at the end of Lent when we receive green palm branches again.

No te preocupes, la Cuaresma no será hasta dentro de más de un mes. Sin embargo, quiero compartir con ustedes una práctica del tesoro de la Iglesia sobre cómo prepararse para la Cuaresma. Las disciplinas de Cuaresma son acerca de la conversión, es decir, alejarse del pecado y seguir a Jesús más de cerca. Estoy escribiendo este mensaje en la Fiesta de la Conversión de San Pablo. San Pablo tuvo una experiencia de conversión muy dramática en el camino a Damasco, pero no terminó allí sino que solo comenzó. San Josemaría dice: "La conversión es cosa de un instante. La santificación es obra de toda la vida".

En el calendario antiguo, había una "mini-temporada" llamada Pre-Cuaresma compuesta por los tres domingos anteriores al Miércoles de Ceniza. Se usaron vestiduras moradas, etc. La Pre-Cuaresma nos dio la oportunidad de prepararnos para guardar una buena Cuaresma. Creo que esto tiene en cuenta la psicología humana mejor que empezar "de golpe" el Miércoles de Ceniza. Aunque no observamos la Pre-Cuaresma litúrgicamente, recomiendo tomar el tiempo previo a la Cuaresma para prepararse para una buena Cuaresma este año. Lo mejor es acudir a la Confesión para empezar la Cuaresma con el alma limpia. Orar y preguntad al Señor qué quiere de nosotros. Pregunta cómo puedes acercarte más a él, particularmente en la limosna, el ayuno y la oración.

Aquí hay algo visible que podemos hacer. Busquen las palmas secas que les dieron el Domingo de Ramos del año pasado y tráigalas a la Iglesia en las próximas dos semanas. Tendremos una caja en el nártex para recoger las palmas con el fin de quemarlas para hacer las cenizas del Miércoles de Ceniza. Quemaremos las cosas secas del pasado para marcar un nuevo comienzo que conducirá a una vida nueva y fresca al final de la Cuaresma cuando recibamos ramos nuevos.
