Be Alert

Jesus calls the attention of his disciples to their need to be always alert. Especially against the suggestions of the world. It could be so strong as to convince them to renounce their commitment with the Kingdom of God.

The exigences and difficulties of discipleship can be heavy and discouraging on them and also on us. The fewer number of members in the primitive community can put in danger the success of such a great and demanding mission. Hence the importance and need to stay alert.

Is it numbers or quality of discipleship that we are looking for? The Christian community is encouraged to keep the faith and readiness, in the midst of so many adversities. Conscious that it is a journey to meet the Lord.

Our community here at Saint Rose of Lima fits very well in this frame of the first community of disciples. There are a lot of voices and reasons telling us to give up and renounce our discipleship. The growth in our city and county seems at times to be overwhelming in front of our resources and efforts to serve God and our people. But we’ll keep pressing forward and will keep our faith, our love, and our commitment to Jesus and His Church, until Heaven. His grace is sufficient for us.

Jesús llama la atención de sus discípulos sobre su necesidad de estar siempre alerta. Especialmente contra las sugerencias del mundo. Puede ser tan fuerte como para convencerlos de renunciar a su compromiso con el Reino de Dios.

Las exigencias y dificultades del discipulado pueden ser pesadas y descorazonadoras para ellos y también para nosotros. El menor número de miembros en la comunidad primitiva puede poner en peligro el éxito de tan grande y exigente misión. De ahí la importancia y necesidad de mantenerse alerta. ¿Es el número o la calidad del discipulado lo que buscamos? Se alienta a la comunidad Cristiana a mantener la fe y la disponibilidad, en medio de tantas adversidades. Conscientes de que es un camino de encuentro con el Señor.

Nuestra comunidad aquí en Santa Rosa de Lima encaja muy bien en este marco de la primera comunidad de discípulos. Hay muchas voces y razones que nos dicen que nos demos por vencidos y renunciemos a nuestro discipulado. El crecimiento en nuestra ciudad y condado a veces parece abrumador frente a nuestros recursos y esfuerzos para servir a Dios y a nuestra gente. Pero seguiremos adelante y mantendremos nuestra fe, nuestro amor y nuestro compromiso con Jesús y Su Iglesia, hasta el Cielo. Su gracia es suficiente para nosotros.
