Dear fellow disciples

“The last will be first…”

This Sunday's parable calls attention to the danger of thinking that external practice of religion alone will save a place in heaven.

The situation of those asking the Lord to open the door to them, claiming intimacy with him is dramatic. Even more dramatic is the Lord’s answer “I do not know you or where you are from.”

Our mere exterior and casual practices of religion are neither proof of discipleship nor a passport to heaven. First because they are an insufficient sign of communion with Our Lord; secondly they can be only what they say “exterior”, shallow rather than signs and consequences of a personal relationship with Jesus and with His Church.

There is wisdom in living our faith from within to without. Striving for union with the Lord and with each other, no matter where we are from, as we hear in the first Reading today, “I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory.”

A sign of our intimacy with the Lord can very well be our run towards holiness and unity in our community.

May we keep asking Saint Rose of Lima to help us, especially during her Novena which we are celebrating this week, in our growth in intimacy with the Lord, through discipleship, holiness, and unity.

“Los últimos serán los primeros…”

La parábola de este domingo llama la atención sobre el peligro de pensar que sólo la práctica externa de la religión nos guardará un lugar en el cielo.

Es dramática la situación de quienes piden al Señor que les abra la puerta, alegando intimidad con Él. Aún más dramática es la respuesta del Señor “No te conozco ni sé de dónde eres”.

Nuestras meras prácticas exteriores y casuales de religión no son prueba de discipulado ni pasaporte al cielo. Primero porque son un signo insuficiente de comunión con Nuestro Señor; en segundo lugar, pueden ser sólo lo que se dice “exterior”, superficial en lugar de signos y consecuencias de una relación personal con Jesús y con su Iglesia.

Hay sabiduría en vivir nuestra fe desde adentro hacia afuera. Esforzarnos por la unión con el Señor y entre nosotros, sin importar de dónde seamos, como escuchamos en la primera lectura de hoy: “Vengo a reunir naciones de todas las lenguas; vendrán y verán mi gloria”.

Un signo de nuestra intimidad con el Señor puede ser nuestra carrera hacia la santidad y la unidad en nuestra comunidad.

Sigamos pidiendo a Santa Rosa de Lima que nos ayude, especialmente durante su Novena que estamos celebrando esta semana, en nuestro crecimiento en la intimidad con el Señor, a través del discipulado, la santidad y la unidad.
