To Whom Can I Be a Neighbor?

07-13-2025Weekly ReflectionFr. Chris Nunes

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

Today’s Gospel is one of the most beloved parables—the Good Samaritan. But it is also one of the most demanding. Jesus is not just telling us to feel compassion; He is telling us to act with compassion.

A lawyer asks, “Who is my neighbor?”—seeking to limit his responsibility. But Jesus flips the question: not “Who is my neighbor?” but “To whom can I be a neighbor?” Discipleship is not about drawing lines but crossing them.

The Samaritan, moved with pity, interrupts his journey, risks his safety, and sacrifices time and resources for a stranger. That’s what discipleship looks like: a heart that sees and a life that responds.

Jesus ends with a clear call: “Go and do likewise.” Not just think, or pray, or wish— but go and do.

Let us ask the Holy Spirit to awaken in us that same compassion and courage. May our discipleship be seen in the way we love those the world forgets.

God Bless.

P. Chris
