The Humble Heart of Discipleship

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

In today's Gospel, Jesus gives us the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector-two men who go up to the Temple to pray. The Pharisee stands proud, listing his good deeds, while the tax collector stands at a distance, humbly asking for mercy. Jesus concludes, "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

True discipleship begins with humility. The disciple of Christ recognizes that every- thing good in his life comes from God's grace. Pride closes the heart to grace; humility opens it wide. The Pharisee prays to himself, but the tax collector prays to God. Only the humble heart can hear the Lord's call and follow it with sincerity. Our God who knows, loves, cares and responds, will listen attentively to the prayer of the humble and will act.

As disciples on mission, we must guard against the temptation of self- righteousness. The Church does not grow through boasting, our only boast should be the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, but rather through humble service, compas- sion, and mercy. To be a disciple is to recognize our constant need for God and to invite others to discover His mercy as well.

May the Holy Spirit give us today the grace to follow Jesus in humility-to see our- selves truthfully before God, and to live as joyful witnesses of His mercy in the world.

El Corazón Humilde del Discipulado

Queridos Discipulos, paz.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesus nos cuenta la parábola del fariseo y el publicano, dos hombres que suben al templo a rezar. El fariseo se muestra orgulloso, enumerando sus buenas obras, mientras que el publicano se mantiene a distancia, pidiendo humildemente misericordia. Jesús concluye: "El que se ensalza será humillado, y el que se humilla será ensalzado."

El verdadero discipulado comienza con la humildad. El discípulo de Cristo reconoce que todo lo bueno en su vida proviene de la gracia de Dios. El orgullo cierra el corazon a la gracia; la humildad lo abre de par en par. El fariseo reza para sí mismo, pero el publicano reza a Dios. Solo el corazon humilde puede escuchar la llamada del Senor y seguirla con sinceridad. Nuestro Dios, que conoce, ama, cuida y responde, escuchara atentamente la oracion de los humildes y actuara.

Como discípulos en mision, debemos guardarnos de la tentacion de la autosuficiencia. La Iglesia no crece a traves de la jactancia, nuestra única jactancia debe ser la Cruz de Nuestro Senor Jesucristo, sino mas bien a traves del servicio humilde, la compasion y la misericordia. Ser discípulo es reconocer nuestra constante necesidad de Dios e invitar a otros a descubrir también Su misericordia.

Que el Espíritu Santo nos conceda hoy la gracia de seguir a Jesús con humildad, de vernos a nosotros mismos con sinceridad ante Dios y de vivir como testigos gozosos de su misericordia en el mundo.
