Salt and Light in the World

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us plainly who a disciple is: "You are the salt of the earth ... You are the light of the world." He doesn't say you should become salt and light - He says you are. Discipleship is not a future project; it is a present identity.

Salt only matters when it disappears into the food. Light only helps when it shines for others. A disciple, then, is not called to draw attention to himself, but to give flavor to the world and clarity in the darkness - often quietly, humbly, and faithfully.

This fits perfectly with what Isaiah proclaims: caring for the hungry, the oppressed, and the afflicted. True discipleship is never abstract or sentimental. It shows itself in concrete acts of love, mercy, and justice. When a disciple lives this way, "your light shall rise in the darkness."

Saint Paul reminds us that this light does not come from our brilliance, but from Christ crucified. We are weak vessels, but that is precisely how God's power becomes visible. The disciple does not rely on clever words, but on a life shaped by the Gospel.

So today, Jesus asks us: Where has our salt lost its taste? Where have we hidden our light? Discipleship means allowing Christ to live so deeply in us that others glimpse Him through our works - and give glory, not to us, but to our Father in heaven.

May the Holy Spirit help us to be salt and light in today's world.

Sal Y Luz en El Mundo

Queridos Discipulos, paz.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesus nos dice claramente quien es un discípulo: "Ustedes son la sal de la tierra ... Ustedes son la luz del mundo." No dice que deban convertirse en sal y luz; dice que lo son. El discipulado no es un proyecto futuro; es una identidad presente.

La sal solo importa cuando se desaparece en la comida. La luz solo ayuda cuando brilla para los demás. Un discípulo, entonces, no está llamado a llamar la atención, sino a dar sabor al mundo y claridad en la oscuridad, a menudo con silencio, humildad y fidelidad.

Esto encaja perfectamente con lo que proclama Isaías: cuidar de los hambrientos, los oprimidos y los afligidos. El verdadero discipulado nunca es abstracto ni sentimental. Se manifiesta en actos concretos de amor, misericordia y justicia. Cuando un discípulo vive así, "tu luz brillara en las tinieblas".

San Pablo nos recuerda que esta luz no proviene de nuestra brillantez, sino de Cristo crucificado. Somos vasos frágiles, pero es precisamente así como se hace visible el poder de Dios. El discípulo no se basa en palabras ingeniosas, sino en una vida moldeada por el Evangelio.

Así que hoy, Jesus nos pregunta: ¿Donde ha perdido su sabor nuestra sal? ¿Dónde hemos escondido nuestra luz? El discipulado significa permitir que Cristo viva tan profundamente en nosotros que otros lo vean a través de nuestras obras y glorifiquen, no a nosotros, sino a nuestro Padre celestial.

Que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude a ser sal y luz en el mundo de hoy.
