Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.
Today, on the great solemnity of Pentecost, the Church celebrates not only the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, but also the birth of the Church’s mission. The frightened disciples who had locked themselves in the upper room to pray and wait are transformed into courageous witnesses. The Spirit changes fear into faith, silence into proclamation, and weakness into missionary zeal.
Jesus says in the Gospel: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Pentecost is therefore not simply a celebration of spiritual consolation; it is a sending forth. Every disciple receives the Holy Spirit not to remain closed in upon oneself, but to become a living instrument of God’s mercy, peace, and truth in the world, a minister of God’s presence.
The Apostles begin to speak in many languages, and everyone understands them. This is a sign that the Gospel is meant for all peoples and nations. The Holy Spirit creates communion where sin had created division. True discipleship always leads to mission, and authentic mission always builds unity.
For us as disciples today, Pentecost asks an important question: where is the Spirit sending me? Perhaps to bring reconciliation within a family, hope to the suffering, faith to the discouraged, unity to our parish, or charity to those who feel forgotten. The mission field begins in the ordinary places of daily life.
The same Holy Spirit given to the Apostles has also been poured into our hearts through Baptism and Confirmation. We are not alone in the mission of the Church. The Spirit teaches us, strengthens us, and gives us the courage to witness to Christ even in difficult times.
May this Pentecost renew in us the fire of missionary discipleship. May the Holy Spirit open our hearts, awaken our gifts, and send us forth as instruments of peace and mercy in our parish, in the Church and in the world.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen.
God Bless
