19th Sunday In Ordinary Time

08-09-2026Weekly ReflectionFather Chris

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

After feeding the multitude, Jesus sends His disciples ahead by boat while He goes up the mountain to pray. During the night, the sea becomes rough, the wind is against them, and fear fills their hearts. Then Jesus comes to them walking on the water and says, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."

The boat is a beautiful image of the Church, and also of our own lives as disciples. We all experience storms: uncertainty, suffering, discouragement, family struggles, and the challenges of living the Gospel in today's world. The Lord never promised a life without storms, but He did promise His presence in the midst of them.

Peter's response is remarkable. At the invitation of Jesus, he steps out of the boat. Discipleship always requires leaving the comfort and security of what is familiar. Mission begins when we trust Christ enough to step out in faith. Peter walks on the water as long as his eyes remain fixed on Jesus. But when he focuses on the wind and the waves, fear overcomes faith, and he begins to sink.

The same is true for us. Whenever we focus more on our problems than on the Lord, fear paralyzes us. Yet even when our faith falters, Jesus immediately reaches out His hand. He does not abandon His disciples because they are weak; He strengthens them precisely in their weakness.

Our missionary call is not based on ouor own abilities but on confidence in Christ. The world needs disciples who are willing to leave the boat, trust the Lord, and proclaim the Gospel with courage. Evangelization is born from hearts that have learned to say, "Lord, save me," and have experienced His saving hand.

As we gather around the Eucharist today, let us ask the Lord for the grace to keep our eyes fixed on Him. May we never allow fear to have the final word. Strengthened by His presence, may we become courageous missionary disciples, bringing hope, peace, and the love of Christ to all whom we encounter. With our lives as disciples and good example as missionaries we'll be able to show how wonderful is to stay in the boat of Peter, the Church, despite what the world says and the disappointments we may have with the Church. The Church is always a safe boat through the storms of life.

"Take courage; it is I. Do not be afraid." May these words accompany us throughout this week as we follow Christ in discipleship and mission.

God Bless

"Tengan valor; soy yo. No tengan miedo."
