God Doesn't Go on Vacation

06-09-2019Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

I want to begin to address some fundamental truths for living as faithful Catholics. Among the most important of these is to keep the 3rd Commandment by going to Sunday Mass. Sunday Mass is essential for our relationship with God and for our relationships within the Church. Unless it is impossible, we must go to Mass every Sunday. As so many of you know, once you have established the habit of Sunday Mass then it is easy to maintain. The difficultly arises when we have to convince ourselves anew each week why we should go to Mass. As a friend of mine has said, it is easy to find reasons not to do something! Save yourself the trouble, and decide that you will go to Mass every Sunday period. If you are a parent, decide that you and your children will attend Mass every Sunday period. God will help you. Don't have arguments with yourself or others. Just do it.

The obligation to attend Mass includes when you are away from home. These days it is easy to find Catholic Churches and Mass times on the internet wherever you are. Even if we cannot receive Holy Communion for some reason, we are still obliged to attend Mass. Only impossibility excuses from Sunday Mass. For example, if you are sick, then you are excused from Mass. If you are a child and have no way to get to Mass, then you are excused. If a child misses Mass for this reason, the child has not sinned but the parent who did not come to Mass and bring the child has sinned.

Finally, the Church teaches us that missing Mass on Sunday is not only a sin but a grave one. That is, it is capable of being a mortal sin, if you know that it is sinful and freely choose to miss Mass anyway. Sunday Mass is fundamental for our relationship with God and the Church. It is certainly not all we need to do to respond to the infinite love of God for us, but it is necessary. And Sunday Mass is so little compare with what God has done for us!

Faithfully,
Fr. Baker

Fielmente,
el P. Baker
