Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

Jesus uses a very common scene of his time to explain his relationship with the disciples. It highlights some important topics of Christian discipleship. The disciples let Jesus guide them, with docility, for He alone knows how to lead them where there is life, life eternal. Having Jesus ahead of them, they will walk safely, not worrying about losing the way toward the goal.

They will learn and know the voice of the Master, the shepherd, amongst the many voices of the world, with its incredible, seductive proposals; they also will learn to avoid and refuse "the voices of strangers" who will try to snatch them away from Jesus and His Church. Above all, Jesus offers the disciples "life in abundance". Life originated in the Father; life based on love and in the power of overcoming selfishness, which is the root of death.

As we are guided by Jesus, the good shepherd (St. John's Gospel calls Him the "beautiful Shepherd) we come to access and enjoy life, the Father's life. Life which will be fulfilled in eternity.

Today, this life is offered, in a special way, to our brothers and sisters who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. I pray that they understand that Confirmation is not the conclusion of a circle but rather, the beginning of the journey of life and witness of their Catholic faith. Through Confirmation we say yes to Christian discipleship and the Holy Spirit empowers us to witness and defend our faith. He also sanctifies us with His presence and gifts, until we enter the eternal feast of the Lamb, where all our gifts are celebrated and return to the Giver.

El Pastor y Las Ovejas

Queridos discípulos, paz.

Jesús utiliza una escena muy común de su tiempo para explicar su relación con los discípulos. Destaca algunos temas importantes del discipulado Cristiano. Los discípulos se dejan guiar por Jesús, con docilidad, porque sólo Él sabe conducirlos donde hay vida, vida eterna. Teniendo a Jesús delante de ellos, los discipulos caminarán seguros, sin preocuparse de perder el camino hacia la meta. Aprenderán y conocerán la voz del Maestro, el pastor, entre tantas voces del mundo, con sus increíbles, seductoras propuestas. También aprenderán a evitar y rechazar "las voces de los extraños" que tratarán de arrebatarlos de Jesús y de su Iglesia. Sobre todo, Jesús ofrece a los discípulos "vida en abundancia". La vida se originó en el Padre; vida basada en el amor y en el poder de vencer el egoísmo, que es la raíz de la muerte.

Guiados por Jesús, el buen pastor (el Evangelio de San Juan lo llama el "hermoso Pastor) llegamos a acceder y disfrutar de la vida, la vida del Padre. Vida que se cumplirá en la eternidad.

Hoy, esta vida se ofrece, de manera especial, a nuestros hermanos y hermanas que recibirán el Sacramento de la Confirmación. Rezo para que entiendan que la Confirmación no es la conclusión de un círculo, sino el comienzo del camino de la vida y el testimonio de su fe católica. A través de la Confirmación decimos sí al discipulado Cristiano y el Espíritu Santo nos empodera para dar testimonio y defender nuestra fe. Él también nos santifica con su presencia y dones, hasta que entramos en la fiesta eterna del Cordero, donde todos nuestros dones son celebrados y regresan al que nos los dio.
