Two Opposite Attitudes

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

The arrogant attitude of some religious authorities was always a target in Jesus' preaching. In fact, The high priests and the elders were often criticized by Him. He would always reveal their behavior and their apparent faithfulness which was just a hidden denial of God's will and ways.

The parable of the two sons illustrates two contrasting ways of aligning (conforming) oneself to God's will. The high priests and elders correspond to those who say 'yes' but refuse to obey. Representing those who are lip worshipers, who practice a false religion of appearances and exterior practices only.

There are, however, those who say 'no' to God but in real, concrete life, strive to do His will; who act in solidarity with the poor; who receive with open arms the stranger, the immigrant or the refugee; who are sensible to the sufferings and struggles of others, who, even if imperfectly, strive for holiness. Their lives are touched by generosity, mercy and a desire for God , even if they at first say 'no' to the demands of Christianity.

The tax collectors and the prostitutes will precede the high priests and elders in the Kingdom of Heaven, for they allowed themselves to be touched by the grace of God and accept the way of conversion. I think about Matthew and Mary Magdalene as great examples of this experience of encounter with Jesus. Their conversion did not stay only in the talk but rather they did the walk in discipleship, and became light, examples, heralds for others. Therefore the discourse of the Kingdom is about saying "yes" and living afterwards a life which reflects our "yes" given to God. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to be such disciples.

Dos Actitudes Opuestas

La actitud arrogante de algunas autoridades religiosas fue siempre un objetivo en la predicación de Jesús. De hecho, a menudo criticaba a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos. Él siempre revelaría el comportamiento de éstos y su aparente fidelidad, que era solo una negación oculta de la voluntad y los caminos de Dios.

La parábola de los dos hijos ilustra dos maneras contrastantes de alinearse (conformarse) con la voluntad de Dios. Los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos corresponden a aquellos que dicen 'sí' pero se niegan a obedecer. Representando a aquellos que son adoradores de labios, que practican una religión falsa de apariencias y prácticas exteriores únicamente.

Hay, sin embargo, quienes dicen “no” a Dios pero en la vida real y concreta se esfuerzan por hacer su voluntad; que actúan en solidaridad con los pobres; que reciben con los brazos abiertos al extranjero, al inmigrante o al refugiado; que son sensibles a los sufrimientos y luchas de los demás, que, aunque sea de forma imperfecta, luchan por la santidad. Sus vidas están tocadas por la generosidad, la misericordia y el deseo de Dios, aunque al principio digan "no" a las exigencias del Cristianismo.

Los publicanos y las prostitutas precederán a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos en el Reino de los Cielos, porque se dejaron tocar por la gracia de Dios y aceptaron el camino de la conversión. Pienso en Mateo y María Magdalena como grandes ejemplos de esta experiencia de encuentro con Jesús. Su conversión no se quedó sólo en la palabra, sino que caminaron en el discipulado y se convirtieron en luz, ejemplo, heraldos para los demás. Por eso el discurso del Reino se trata de decir "sí" y vivir una vida que refleje nuestro "sí" dado a Dios. Pidamos al Espíritu Santo que seamos ese tipo de discípulos.
