The Identity of the Baptist

Dear Fellow Disciples, Rejoice in the Lord!

The identity of John the Baptist was not understood right away by the disciples of Jesus. They started to see that his preaching, along with the austerity of his life, had several similarities with the prophet Elijah.

The understanding of the Baptist came based on the prophetic tradition from the time of the Babylonian exile. In fact, this tradition presents the prophet who prepares the people to return to the Promised Land. The Baptist resembles the prophet whose voice was raised in the desert calling the people "to prepare the way for the Lord". In that way, the disciples understood his preaching as preparation for the coming of the Messiah Jesus.

May the Holy Spirit help us to be the "Baptists" of today. To prepare the way of the Lord in the heart of a humanity growing away from God quickly and in such need of salvation.

La Identidad del Bautista

Queridos discípulos, ¡regocíjense en el Señor!

Los discípulos de Jesús no comprendieron de inmediato la identidad de Juan el Bautista. Comenzaron a ver que su predicación, junto con la austeridad de su vida, tenía varias similitudes con la del profeta Elías.

La comprensión del Bautista se basó en la tradición profética de la época del exilio babilónico. De hecho, esta tradición presenta al profeta que prepara al pueblo para regresar a la Tierra Prometida. El Bautista se parece al profeta cuya voz se alzó en el desierto llamando al pueblo a "preparar el camino al Señor". De esa manera, los discípulos entendieron su predicación como preparación para la venida del Mesías Jesús.

Que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude a ser los "bautistas" de hoy. Preparar el camino del Señor en el corazón de una humanidad que crece rápidamente alejada de Dios y tan necesitada de salvación.
