They Went and Saw

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

We are starting again at ordinary time and right away, we are in front of an invitation from Jesus, "Come and See". The disciples of John went and saw where Jesus lived and what kind of rabbi he was. They stayed with Him. What did they see? Or what did they want to see? Was it just curiosity on their part? For the master Jesus was a pilgrim, with no housing nor means.

The object of the disciples' vision was the identity of Jesus. They saw who he was. They recognized his identity as the Messiah. So much so that when leaving they announced Him as the Christ and worked so that others would encounter Him as well.

Their vision of Jesus wasn't limited to a human, physical vision that detects details of places and circumstances. It was rather a spiritual vision permitting them to go beyond the empirical appearances to encounter and recognize Jesus.

Today those who want to follow Jesus in discipleship will need to follow the same partner of the journey of the first disciples. Discipleship will not be possible if we don't "come and see", recognize and commit to Jesus' identity. Otherwise, it will be a fake or false discipleship. For we are supposed to know Him first to avoid inconsistency and error.

Discipleship today passes but is not limited to, through prayer, the Sacraments, Bible and Catechism study, as well as knowledge of the Church's teaching from the sources.

May the Holy Spirit be our master and guide of true discipleship.

Queridos Discípulos, paz.

Empezamos de nuevo en el tiempo ordinario y enseguida nos encontramos ante una invitación de Jesús: "Ven y mira". Los discípulos de Juan fueron y vieron dónde vivía Jesús y qué clase de rabino era. Se quedaron con Él. ¿Que vieron? ¿O qué querían ver? ¿Fue sólo curiosidad de su parte? Pues el maestro Jesús era un peregrino, sin vivienda ni medios.

El objeto de la visión de los discípulos era la identidad de Jesús. Vieron quién era. Reconocieron su identidad como el Mesías. Tanto es así que al salir lo anunciaron como el Cristo y trabajaron para que otros también lo encontraran.

Su visión de Jesús no se limitaba a una visión física humana que detecta detalles de lugares y circunstancias. Fue más bien una visión espiritual que les permitió ir más allá de las apariencias empíricas para encontrar y reconocer a Jesús.

Hoy quienes quieran seguir a Jesús en el discipulado necesitarán seguir al mismo compañero de camino de los primeros discípulos. El discipulado no será posible si no "venimos y vemos", reconocemos y nos comprometemos con la identidad de Jesús. De lo contrario, será un discipulado fingido o falso. Porque se supone que debemos conocerlo a Él primero para evitar inconsistencias y errores.

El discipulado hoy pasa pero no se limita a, a través de la oración, los Sacramentos, el estudio de la Biblia y el Catecismo, así como el conocimiento de las enseñanzas de la Iglesia desde las fuentes.

Que el Espíritu Santo sea nuestro maestro y guía del verdadero discipulado.
