"Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch."

After Jesus tells Simon to set out into deep water and lower his nets for a catch, Simon catches more fish than he ever has. Jesus performs this miracle to awaken faith in Simon, and it works. When Simon comes before Jesus, he falls down before Him and acknowledges his sinfulness: "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man." (In Spanish: “¡Apártate de mí, Señor, porque soy un pecador!”) Then Jesus interprets the miraculous catch of fish for Simon by calling him to be an apostle and to go out to catch men, not fish. Repentance comes first, and then fruitful discipleship follows.

We are likewise called to go out as witnesses of Jesus to others, but first we must encounter Jesus as Simon did as Lord of his life. Until we fall down before Jesus in repentance and serve Him as Lord, we really cannot go out effectively to others. Our nets will come up empty.

Next weekend, our young people preparing for First Holy Communion will make their first Confessions. The other priests and I have been hearing the Confessions of our Confirmation candidates before the celebration of that sacrament with Bishop Spalding on February 20. This is the right order so that the sacraments are real encounters with Jesus that empower us to bear spiritual fruit in our lives, especially the fruit of bringing others to encounter Jesus as Lord.

Fall down before the Lord in repentance, and rise up as a disciple who bears fruit for the Kingdom!

“Lleva la barca mar adentro y echa sus redes para pescar”

Después de que Jesús le dice a Simón que se adentre en aguas profundas y baje sus redes para pescar, Simón pesca más que nunca. Jesús realiza este milagro para despertar la fe en Simón, y funciona. Cuando Simón se presenta ante Jesús, se postra ante Él y reconoce su pecaminosidad: “¡Apártate de mí, Señor, porque soy un pecador!” Entonces Jesús interpreta la pesca milagrosa de Simón llamándolo a ser apóstol y salir a pescar hombres, no peces. Primero viene el arrepentimiento, y luego sigue un discipulado fructífero.

Nosotros también estamos llamados a salir como testigos de Jesús a los demás, pero primero debemos encontrar a Jesús como lo hizo Simón como Señor de su vida. Hasta que no nos postremos ante Jesús en arrepentimiento y le sirvamos como Señor, realmente no podemos salir a otros de manera efectiva. Nuestras redes quedarán vacías.

El próximo fin de semana, nuestros jóvenes que se preparan para la Primera Comunión harán sus primeras Confesiones. Los otros sacerdotes y yo hemos estado escuchando las Confesiones de nuestros candidatos a la Confirmación antes de la celebración de ese sacramento con el obispo Spalding el 20 de febrero. Este es el orden correcto para que los sacramentos sean encuentros reales con Jesús que nos capaciten para dar fruto espiritual en nuestro vidas, especialmente el fruto de llevar a otros al encuentro de Jesús como Señor.

¡Postrarse ante el Señor en arrepentimiento, y levantarse como discípulo que da frutos para el Reino!
