Recognizing the Risen Lord

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace!

The journey of the disciples to Emmaus concludes with a meal shared with a stranger, at first, then no more a stranger but to their surprise, with the Risen Lord. Hospitality is common among Jews, however here it's also a sign of the interior transformation the disciples experienced and lived.

The stranger walking with them reminds them of all the prophecies about the Messiah. It seems that he was doing a liturgy of the Word or a Lectio Divina to help them to understand the Scriptures and how they have been fulfilled in the past few days. Then, his actions during the meal are very similar with Jesus' action at the last supper. This repetition was sufficient for their eyes to be open and for them to recognize the Risen Jesus in the breaking of the bread.

The Fathers of the Church questioned why Jesus disappeared and where did he go after the disciples recognized Him. The only answer they offer is "He went in the bread" making sure the Church from her very beginnings admitted, accepted and believed in the Real Presence.

When we, the new disciples, celebrate the Eucharist with attention and devotion, full participation and prayer, immersed in the Paschal Mystery, we too are able to recognize Jesus, the Crucified and Risen Lord who offers Himself for us and with us to the Father "in the breaking of the Bread".

May the Holy Spirit help us to be always all there at Mass, with mind, heart, soul, and body, to experience the Risen Lord in Word and Sacrament.

RECONOCIENDO AL SEÑOR RESUCITADO

Queridos discípulos, ¡paz!

El camino de los discípulos a Emaús concluye con una comida compartida con un extraño, primero, luego ya no más extraño pero, para su sorpresa; con el Señor Resucitado.

La hospitalidad es común entre los judíos, sin embargo aquí también es un signo de la transformación interior que experimentaron y vivieron los discípulos.

El extraño que camina con ellos les recuerda todas las profecías sobre el Mesías. Parece que estaba haciendo una liturgia de la Palabra o una Lectio Divina para ayudarlos a entender las Escrituras y cómo se han cumplido en los últimos días. Luego, sus acciones durante la co mida son muy similares a las de Jesús en la última cena. Esta repetición fue suficiente para que sus ojos se abrieran y reconocieran a Jesús Resucitado en la fracción del pan.

Los Padres de la Iglesia cuestionaron por qué Jesús desapareció y adónde fue después de que los discípulos lo reconocieron. La única respuesta que ofrecen es "Se fue en el pan" asegurándose que la Iglesia desde sus inicios admitió, aceptó y creyó en la Presencia Real.

Cuando nosotros, los nuevos discípulos, celebramos la Eucaristía con atención y devoción, plena participación y oración, inmersos en el Misterio Pascual, también nosotros somos capaces de reconocer a Jesús, el Señor Crucificado y Resucitado que se ofrece por nosotros y con nosotros al Padre "en la fracción del Pan".

Que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude a estar siempre todos presentes en la Misa, con mente, corazón, alma y cuerpo, para experimentar al Señor Resucitado en Palabra y Sacramento.
